Our Industry, Our Standards
The Irish Thoroughbred Welfare Council was created by HRI in 2020 to drive policy in the critical area of Equine Welfare. In 2021 HRI engaged with industry’s participants including breeders, jockeys, owners, stable staff and trainers through a series of co-design workshops. From these workshops, the four principles for good equine welfare were developed. These are Good Feeding, Good Housing, Good Health, and Good Well-being which are accepted as an accurate synopsis of modern equine welfare thinking in Ireland. The booklet lays out the necessary criteria required for every yard to measure and implement these principles.
